Campaign Highlights
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Anthony Albanese MP, rejected Canberra Airport’s 2008 Draft Mast Plan on 21 November 2008. His reasons included the airport’s failure to address community concerns about aircraft noise. Read the Minister’s press release.
Senator Bob Brown tabled a notice of motion in the Senate on 25 September 2008 calling for the implementation of a curfew at Canberra Airport. Unfortunately this was defeated on 13 October 2008, but it was a very successful way of drawing attention to the curfew issue. Liberal Senator Gary Humphries’ hoisted his colours to the mast. He said that a curfew ‘would threaten the economic development of Canberra and Australia as a whole’, and that ‘Canberra airport is the only airport between Brisbane and Melbourne that is curfew free’. Fulls details on Hansard.
Noise monitoring in Hackett – Airservices Australia installed a noise monitor in Hackett in December 2008 and the ACT Government appointed acoustics expert, Marion Burgess, to review the findings. This followed repeated complaints by north Canberra residents that Canberra Airport’s figures for aircraft noise were dodgy. Readings from the Hackett Noise Monitor can be followed on WebTrak.
